2-year-old child shot outside Federal Way IHOP dies

Early investigation suggests the child's father and another person were shooting at each other in the parking lot, police say.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash — A 2-year-old boy shot outside a Federal Way IHOP on Thursday has died, according to the Federal Way Police Department.

Federal Way police said officers responded to a shooting call outside the location off Southwest Campus Drive. A few minutes later, police said the boy was brought into the hospital with a gunshot wound.

The boy was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, where the child later died.

Police say "preliminary investigations" suggest the child's father and another person were shooting at each other in the parking lot, and that this was not a random occurrence. As of Friday, April 5, investigators believe a suspect, who has not been identified, fired at the 2-year-old's father, who returned fire in self-defense. The father is believed to have been targeted.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 253-835-2121. Tips can also be submitted through the Crimestoppers website.
