Suspected drunk driver steals car, crashes into Lynnwood house

The homeowner estimates the suspect caused approximately $100,000 in damage.

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Lynnwood police say a teenage driver in a stolen car barreled around a neighborhood corner Monday night, crashed through a fence, and plowed into a home under construction.

The suspect was under the influence of alcohol.

"He was coming about 40 mph and this is the damage," says homeowner Joe Jain, pointing to a large dent in the side of his house.

From the outside the damage doesn't look all that bad, but inside tells a different story.

Jain believes he might be looking at $100,000 in damage.

"Well, there is structural damage," he says, examining a support beam bulging through an inside wall. "This kid has got a lot of growing up to do."

Jain is building the house for his entire family to live in.

He wants his 80-year-old parents and four kids to all be under one roof. He told KING 5 he has been building the house for his family for a year.

They were hoping to move in in about a month, but now, no one is sure when that will happen.

"It's definitely not a good thing," Jain said.

The scene was captured on a home surveillance system.

It looks like it could be out of a video game, and it kind of was...considering what Jain was doing at the moment of the crash.

"I was actually playing (the video game) Grand Theft Auto. Then this happens," Jain laughed. "I was doing pretty good, too."

All kidding aside, Jain says as he has been building the house he has had at least five separate incidents with people trying to steal construction equipment.

He hopes the young suspect in this case turns his life around before he crashes and burns.

"These kids need some serious role models," says Jain. "I mean, if they're able to cause this much damage, imagine if they learned a trade. They could really kick butt."

Lynnwood police say the suspect was not badly hurt.

He was released to his parents.
