RENTON, Wash. — A 19-year-old accused of stabbing a man in Renton is now out of custody, the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office (KCPAO) said Monday.
According to probable cause documents, officers were called to an apartment on NE 18th Street on Sept. 27 for a reported stabbing. The suspect called to say "he stabbed someone" and dispatch reported to police a "male stabbed handyman inside home."
Officers contacted the suspect outside the apartment, who had blood on his pants and shoes. Renton police found a 65-year-old man inside the apartment suffering from knife wounds to the chest and groin area, court documents said. The man was declared dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect did not verbally acknowledge his Miranda rights and did not answer any questions about the stabbing. When asked if he was hurt, he told police his shoulder hurt but would not elaborate, police said.
Witnesses from a nearby apartment said they heard an argument and scuffling and eventually looked out and saw the suspect covered in blood and holding a bloody knife while standing in front of the apartment. Documents said the police had yet to recover the bloody knife as of his initial booking.
When the suspect was taken to the Renton Police Department and placed in an interview room, he did not acknowledge his rights and did not answer any of the officer's general questions, documents indicated.
The suspect made a first appearance in court Saturday, KCPAO said. Prosecutors argued he should be held on a high bail. The judge set the suspect's bail at $50,000 after both sides made their case.
A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said the suspect posted bond and is out of police custody.
