Teen charged as an adult in connection to killing of beloved Tacoma bagel shop co-founder

Malik Cornelius, who is being charged as an adult, faces a charge of second-degree murder. A discovery hearing is set for Aug. 1.

NEW ORLEANS — The 16-year-old boy arrested in connection to the shooting death of Tacoma bagel shop co-owner Jacob Carter in New Orleans pleaded not guilty on May 21.

Malik Cornelius, who is being charged as an adult, faces a charge of second-degree murder. Bail was set at $600,000.

A discovery hearing is set for Aug. 1.

Carter was killed in the Marigny neighborhood on Jan. 5 while he was on vacation with his husband. The New Orleans Police Department said Carter was found dead after a shooting near Bourbon and Kerlerec Streets around 1:30 a.m. that day.

The teen suspect was arrested around Jan. 12.

Carter and his husband Daniel Blagovich owned Howdy Bagel together.

The bagel shop was closed for a month after Carter was killed. It reopened in February following an outpouring of community support, which included a fundraiser by businesses as well as a GoFundMe page. The GoFundMe page raised just over $300,000.

At the time of the bagel shop's reopening, Blagovich said it felt right to continue his and his husband's shared dream.

"I never planned on doing any of this without him, and I know he's said the same to me before, so I feel like he's happy that I'm trying my best," he said.
