TUKWILA, Wash. — A 14-year-old is in custody after he allegedly rammed a Tukwila Police Department (TPD) vehicle while trying to flee from officers in a stolen car.
TPD said a detective in an unmarked car saw a stolen vehicle on Strander Boulevard Tuesday night. With assistance from a uniformed detective in a patrol car, police successfully used spike strips on the stolen vehicle.
The suspect rammed one of the detectives in an effort to flee the scene but was eventually taken into custody after giving up, according to Tukwila police.
As Tukwila police indicated in their release, crimes involving younger and younger teens seem to be commonplace now around western Washington.
In September, a 15-year-old in Everett was gunned down at a bus stop on his way to school by two men in what police believe was a gang dispute.
In August, two 15-year-olds were arrested after allegedly shooting a Tacoma police detective and then fleeing the scene.
Seattle police said they were in a chase in August in Rainier Beach with kids who turned out to be 12 and 13 years old.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department told KING 5 in August that it is seeing a steep rise in auto thefts involving teens.
“Unfortunately, these are younger kids 14, 15, 16 years old that we’re catching," Sgt. Darren Moss said. "They’re going to find out the hard way that this is not a game. They’re going be charged as adults in a lot of these cases when they’re shooting people, committing murders, or they’re getting themselves killed as well.”
