Shooting during brawl outside Seattle apartment leaves teen injured

Police said a brawl broke out after a party, where eventually a teen was shot.

SEATTLE — A Seattle teen is in the hospital Thursday morning after being shot during a brawl that spilled out of an apartment party in the University District, police said.

Seattle Police Department (SPD) officers responded to the 5200 block of 15th Avenue Northeast around 5 a.m. Police determined that a party in an apartment was taking place, before a brawl broke out at some point.

The altercation spilled out onto the street, police said, and eventually someone pulled out a gun and shot into the crowd. The suspect fired about 15 shots. An 18-year-old man was struck in the leg and driven to the hospital by other people at the party.

“[It's] definitely not something that we want to see. Any time we have gun violence, it’s a concern to us," said Marcus Johnson with the nonprofit U District Partnership. "We don’t want to see guns in the hands of students and young adults.”

The teen was taken to the hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled the scene. The only description police offered was that the shooter was male. Detectives were called to the scene for further investigation.

Fifteen 9mm fired cartridge casings were recovered as evidence.
