SEATTLE — The teen suspects arrested on Feb. 1 in connection with two intentional hit-and-runs in Seattle last November were formally charged Tuesday, Feb. 6.
A 15-year-old boy faces two counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of hit-and-run and two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle.
A 13-year-old girl faces two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of taking a motor vehicle without permission. The assault charges were amended from assault in the second degree.
The teens, both from Snohomish County, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
KING 5 is not naming the teens because they have not been charged as adults.
Through a victim's advocate, one of the victims asked that the teens are not released on electronic home monitoring because they are a threat to the community. The girl was denied being released on home monitoring.
Police arrested the teens following an investigation into the hit-and-runs that occurred on or near Aurora Avenue between Seattle's Bitter Lake and Licton Springs neighborhoods.
Surveillance video from the area of North 107th Street just west of Aurora Avenue North, taken around 1:50 a.m., appears to show a car purposely hitting a woman. Multiple people stopped to help before she was carried to the passenger side of someone's car.
The second hit-and-run took place in the 9600 block of Aurora Avenue North at an unknown time. Police believe it took place on the same day as the first incident. Cellphone video shows a victim walking in a bus lane when the suspects struck the victim from behind.
The suspects drove away after both incidents.
At the time, police were not able to identify the victims despite reviewing 911 call logs, hospital admissions and canvassing both areas for witnesses. After video of both incidents was distributed to media outlets, both victims confirmed they were seriously injured in the hit-and-runs.
Seattle detectives spent "countless hours" over a period of about two months attempting to find the teens responsible for the crimes and develop probable cause to arrest them. They discovered both vehicles used in the assaults were stolen and later recovered.
Shortly after 11 a.m. on Feb. 1, Seattle police officers, along with officers assigned to the Community Response Group, arrested the teens in Snohomish County.
