Tony Reed describes hiding slayed Arlington couple at trial

The brother of suspected killer John Reed described disposing of the bodies of murdered Arlington couple Patrick Shunn and Monique Patenaude.
Tony Reed testifies at his brother John Reed's trial on May 22, 2018.

The younger brother of accused killer John Reed followed through with a plea deal Tuesday and took the stand against him.

John Reed, 55, is charged with killing his neighbors, Patrick Shunn and Monique Patenaude in April 2016 over a land dispute. After enlisting his brother's help, prosecutors claim the two dumped the victims' cars and buried the bodies in the woods behind their home.

"He said those people are dead, and we're going to get rid of them," testified Tony Reed.

At times, Tony Reed spoke matter-of-factly about the process of disposing of the couples' bodies.

"It gives you an adrenaline rush. It's not what you're planning to do, obviously," he said with a laugh.

Prosecutor Craig Matheson asked which body they buried first.

"Monique," said Tony Reed. "Oh no, [it was] Patrick. We did the hardest first."

John Reed watched his brother's day-long testimony without expression.

Tony Reed claimed his brother shot the couple in self-defense. He also changed the story he told police two years ago, testifying his brother told him Shunn and Patenaude pulled a gun on him, so he used their gun to kill them.

Matheson asked Tony Reed if he was lying to police two years ago.

"I only started lying after you started lying," he answered.

John Reed's attorney told the jury during open statements that the defendant killed the couple in self-defense.

John Reed is expected to testify later this week.
