SEATTLE — A Seattle Walgreens location suffered significant damage early Tuesday morning after a pick-up truck backed into it several times in what appears to be an attempted ATM theft.
Video from a Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) camera showed a white pick-up truck back into the front entrance of the Walgreens on South Jackson Street several different times, breaking glass and causing significant damage to the location's security gate.
At some point, at least one of the three suspects in the white truck got out and tried putting straps on the Walgreens ATM to try and pull it out. However, the suspects appeared to give up and drove off without securing the ATM, leaving the straps behind along with a knocked-over street sign.
Police said the suspects ditched the truck a couple blocks away from the store. The owner of the truck told KING 5 the vehicle was impounded at a lot in Seattle.
The attempted theft at this store has an entire neighborhood feeling broken.
"Thefts that slow us down, burden the community and burdens people like me," said Glenn Brooks, who lives near Walgreens. "I came to use the cash machine today."
Brooks has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 50 years.
"This is the fourth time," Brooks said. "They've been trying to get the cash machine before. We took it out, and they brought it back in, new management and this is what happens."
Nancy Shields is another longtime patron of Walgreens, still shaken by what happened.
"My heart is really hurt," Shields said. "I'm just so hurt, like I said over my neighborhood store."
Brooks said he is confident justice will be served.
"We'll find you, but don't come back here again," Brooks said.
The store reopened to the public at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
