LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Surveillance video from inside Alderwood Mall shows it took less than 10 seconds for a fight to break out between two groups of boys and 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson being shot and killed on July 3.
The video, heavily edited by police before being provided to KING 5, showed one of the boys punching 16-year-old Samuel L. Gizaw of Edmonds. The boys were captured on video running away from Gizaw after he pulled out a gun to allegedly shoot the boy who punched him, according to police.
Gizaw gives chase as the boys run toward the food court exit and fires the gun, according to a statement of probable cause. A bullet struck Woods-Johnson.
Body cam video showed officers arrive within minutes and perform CPR on Woods-Johnson. She was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center, where she was declared dead.
Gizaw fled the scene.
That same night, relatives brought Gizaw to the Mukilteo Police Department per his request. They confirmed he was wearing the same clothing in the surveillance video as he was when he was dropped off at the mall earlier in the day.
Relatives said they did not know how he had access to any weapons.
Bail for Gizaw was first set at $50,000 cash only and $500,000 bondable. Gizaw bonded out.
He was re-arrested July 9 and charged as an adult for first-degree murder, second-degree murder, assault and juvenile in possession of a firearm. Bail was set at $2 million. He pleaded not guilty.
Police determined the initial dispute in the mall was over a feud that began because, during a group phone call earlier in the year, Gizaw made a disrespectful comment about a deceased person associated with the boy who punched him.
