BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- A woman died Friday after she was hit in the head by a stray bullet late Thursday night. The shooter was firing at someone who was stealing his car, sheriff's deputies said.
A man heard his car being stolen from the front of his house around 11 p.m. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said the owner fired several shots and thought he hit the car, but the driver got away.
One of the bullets hit the woman, Linda Green, who was in her bed, two blocks away. Green was taken to the hospital, but Green's daughter, Michelle Sargent said medics couldn't revive her, because her heart was too weak. Green was pronounced dead Friday.
Sargent said she lost her best friend and she will be missed by a lot of people.
"This is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with," said Sargent.
Neighbor Bob Rowsey, whose house was hit with two bullets, said he and Green had a deal as neighbors to watch out for each other.
"She treated me great," said Rowsey, "She just didn't deserve it."
The shooter was arrested for investigation of assault, but Green's death could result in a more serious charge.
Detectives located the man's stolen car abandoned, about a mile from the home. The rear window was shot out. No one has been arrested for the theft.
