Students rally to save Catharine Blaine K-8 from Seattle school consolidation plan

The kids were joined by parents, teachers and concerned community members.

SEATTLE — A group of sixth graders organized a rally Tuesday night to protest Seattle Public Schools placing Catharine Blaine K-8 in each of its school closure proposals last week.

One of the plans would close 17 schools and the other would shut down 21.

"I just don't want Blaine to close, I love this school so much. I love my teachers and my community and the staff here," said Evelyn, a sixth grader at the school. "It's like a human body, everyone does something to contribute."

The students were joined by parents, concerned community members and some teachers.

"I cried when I was up there today. I didn't cry because I was sad, I cried because I felt so much support from the community," said parent Jake Milstein. "Tears of resilience, we will win this."

The group marched from the school to Magnolia Lutheran Church, where the community council held a meeting.

School board director Sarah Clark attended the meeting virtually.

SPS has scheduled a series of informational meetings before a final vote, which is expected in December.
