TUKWILA, Wash. — Thousands of students went back to school this week with many more heading back to start a new school year after Labor Day. The Tukwila School District starts on Sept. 3.
Thanks to generous donations, the district said it received enough backpacks for every elementary student in its district, along with more than $15,000 worth of school supplies.
Contributions were made by community partners, including from the City of Tukwila, Boeing, the Exchange Club of Highline, Costco, and the Equity in Education Coalition.
The district said these donations are particularly vital for newcomer and asylum-seeking families, ensuring all students have the tools they need to succeed.
Several volunteers sorted and delivered the supplies to district schools.
To prepare staff for a new school year, the district held its 2024-25 All Staff Kick Off.
Tukwila Schools Superintendent Dr. Concie Pedroza said the gathering "restorative healing." The event emphasized the importance of culturally based knowledge in addressing and healing from the effects of racial inequity.
Dr. Pedroza stopped by KING 5 Mornings on Saturday to talk about the district's preparations for the 2024-25 school year. To watch the interview, click the video player above.
