'Enchant' transforms Safeco Field into a winter wonderland

The North Pole comes to the heart of Seattle.
The world's largest Christmas light maze fills Safeco Field.

SEATTLE — It's not the North Pole. It just looks that way. Enchant is the brainchild of Kevin Johnston, founder of Vancouver's Shine Lighting Group.

"We started doing Christmas lights back when I was 19," Johnston says.

What began as a home holiday decorating service less than a decade ago has grown to this stadium-sized display, requiring an assembly crew of 60 people, utilizing 56 full trailers and three weeks of setup.

Johnston says, "Everything's custom-designed by us."

With 2.5 million lights, it's the world's largest Christmas light maze. Visitors are encouraged to find each of Santa's reindeer, huge light sculptures located throughout the massive layout.

"As you find each reindeer you get to scratch it off," Johnston explains. "And at the end of the maze you get your prize."

While you're at it, you can do a little Christmas shopping at the artisan's market, or rent skates to glide along a 350-foot long trail of ice.

Towering above it all, an 80-foot-tall Christmas tree.

"It's got 48,000 pounds of concrete at the base of it," says Johnston.

It's all part of a winter wonderland in the center of Safeco Field.

Johnston says, "Everything's larger than life."

Enchant runs through December 30th.
