'Seven Seconds' is similar to Seattle-based crime drama 'The Killing'

The 10-episode series is now streaming on Netflix.
Clare-Hope Ashitey talks to entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb about her role in Seven Seconds.

If you liked the Seattle-based procedural The Killing, you may want to binge Seven Seconds on Netflix.

Developed by the same writer, the new show is set in New Jersey and centers on the cover-up of a hit and run involving a black teenager and a police officer.

British actress Clare-Hope Ashitey plays an American prosecutor who investigates the case.

“I thought (the script) was fantastic and I thought it was very gripping and I think it's very rare to read something on the page and be so gripped by it,” she said.

The series is dark and somber, with each character struggling in a distinct way.

Regina King's pain as a grieving mother is palpable. The detective who caused the accident is tormented by what he's done. No one is simply good or bad.

And that, Ashitey says, is exactly the point.

"We all make poor choices and we all make good choices but you have to understand that we have the capacity for both or we won't understand anything at all,” she said. "It is a such a current issue in American life and society that really, at the end of the day, more important than critics liking it or not liking it… just trying to help people understand the experiences of people who aren't like them, for me is the most important thing."

All ten episodes of Seven Seconds are now streaming on Netflix.
