SEATTLE - The makers of bacon salt are masters of marketing.
Their newest product, a bacon-scented pillow case, is now available for holiday gifting.
But their most memorable publicity stunt happened several years ago, when they unveiled a sculpture made of bacon.
"We really felt with bacon, this is a showcase piece," said Dave Lefkow, co-founder of J & D Foods.
The company hired a professional artist to create a bust of actor Kevin Bacon, working in a medium of bacon bits and cold storage.
"He basically had this sculpture, as it was a work in progress, in his refrigerator," Lefkow said. "So he'd come downstairs, be looking for a late night snack, and there's Kevin Bacon's head in his fridge. Which had to be amazing."
"100 years from now, as art historians look back at this, how will Bacon Kevin Bacon be remembered?" asked Evening Magazine reporter Kim Holcomb.
"He may be remembered as the greatest piece of meat pop art ever created," Lefkow replied.
Bacon Kevin Bacon was auctioned on Ebay, and the money was donated to charity.
