KING 5 poll: Hospital capacity worries Washingtonians in coronavirus outbreak

As a KING 5 survey found concern about hospital capacity, the chief of staff of the Army said a field facility will take pressure off local hospitals.

SEATTLE — An exclusive KING 5 News poll found that nearly one-third of those surveyed statewide think they will not get infected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Of those surveyed, 26% believe if they do get it, they will only have mild symptoms, and 28% say they are not sure.

We also asked how concerned people are about getting sick and if they're worried about hospitals getting too full.

The results show, when SurveyUSA asked 600 Washington adults, 33% said they are extremely concerned that they will get coronavirus and need a hospital bed, but a hospital bed will not be available.

The CenturyLink Field Event Center has been transformed into a field hospital over the past few days. U.S. Army Soldiers from the 627th Army Hospital from Fort Carson, Colorado are working with Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers to staff the field hospital.

The field hospital isn't meant to treat coronavirus patients, but instead treat those with other medical needs, such as broken bones. It is a full hospital with about 250 beds, an operating room, x-ray capabilities and a blood bank.

On Wednesday, General James McConville, chief of staff for the Army, visited the site, and said what they are doing here will help overwhelmed hospitals very soon.

"We are talking about the next couple days. They are set up right now," said McConville. "They are working to really take the pressure off some of the hospitals in this area and take the non-COVID patients and let the hospitals in Seattle focus on COVID patients."
