BELFAIR, Wash. — They’re meant to deliver students, but with schools closed the bus drivers of the North Mason School District are now delivering meals to those students.
Starting Monday drivers started delivering bagged breakfasts and lunches to bus stops throughout the rural district.
“We’re a high-poverty district,” said Superintendent Dana Rosenbach, who said some schools have more than 70% of students who qualify for free or reduced-priced meals.
Rosenbach decided to have the food delivered because most of the students in the district cannot walk to their schools to pick up meals.
“It’s a big deal for us,” Aerie Todd said.
She has five students in the district.
“I don’t drive,” Todd said, “Going eight miles to the schools is not an option for us.”
The school bus drivers expect to start delivering homework along with the meals starting next week.
That would be more good news for Todd.
"I'm not a home school person. I can't do it. It's hard," she said.
