SAN JUAN COUNTY, Wash. — The first person in San Juan County to show symptoms consistent with the 2019 coronavirus linked to a global outbreak is being tested by the Centers for Disease Control.
San Juan County Health & Community Services is assessing the potential risk to the public and will respond if the person under investigation becomes a confirmed case.
Health officials say the risk in Washington state remains low.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) originated in the City of Wuhan, China. By Feb. 14 it had killed nearly 1,400 people in China and infected tens of thousands of people worldwide.
A total of 25 people in Washington state have been tested for the virus so far, including the person in San Juan County. Of those, 23 tested negative. One person tested positive.
A total of 577 people in Washington state are under supervision. People being supervised include those who came in close contact with confirmed cases as well as people who have returned from China in the past 14 days.
It can take up to 14 days for symptoms of COVID-19 to appear.
