SEATTLE – Newly examined samples of toxic algae from Lake Tapps show no detectable concentrations of toxins, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department announced Friday.
But the department is still urging caution for people and pets if they see algae in the water.
Health officials on Thursday urged people to stay out of the water after about a dozen people got sick. But the new tests results have caused them to change their advisory to a caution.
“Although the illnesses people have reported are consistent with symptoms of toxic algae exposure, we do not believe the conditions that would further threaten public health are widely present. Again, when in doubt, stay out,” said Brad Harp, water program resources manager in a statement.
The department may re-test the water early next week.
People who reported illnesses had gone swimming in the water last weekend and two more got sick after swimming on Aug. 16 and 17. Everyone has recovered, according to the health department.
