SHELTON, Wash. -- A historic hotel in downtown Shelton caught fire early Saturday morning, causing the building to collapse.

Chief Patti with Central Mason Fire & EMS out of Shelton says that the call came in after midnight at the Old Shelton Hotel on S. 2nd Street and W. Grove Street.

Shortly after crews arrived, the building collapsed, making it impossible for firefighters to conduct an interior attack.

Chief Patti says that the hotel was built in the 1920s and has been abandoned for years. It was a known spot for transients.

Search dogs were out this morning looking for evidence of any human presence or remains and came back negative.

The fire was put under control in about 30 minutes.

Mason PUD 3 says power was restored to downtown shortly before 4 a.m.
