The H1 Unlimited Hydroplane races brought plenty of excitement to Lake Washington for Seafair 2018.
In the final heat, the excitement reached new heights when the Oberto hydroplane went airborne 60 feet and did a full flip before landing upright. The U-1918 hydroplane was traveling more than 160 mph at the time, driven by Cal Phipps of Avon Lake, Ohio.
The tail of the boat was damaged in the crash, but driver Phipps was not hurt. According to H1 Unlimited, the safety mechanisms spared Phipps from serious injury.
The final heat re-started about an hour later. The victory went to driver Andrew Tate in the Les Schwab hydroplane.
Before the hydroplane action took off Sunday, the Boeing Air Show wowed onlookers with a flight from Fat Albert and high-flying show from the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.
