Speed, weather and inexperience caused crash in Tacoma that blocked I-5 for hours

A crash involving a semi-truck on southbound I-5 in Tacoma closed the freeway for hours Tuesday morning.

The driver of a semi-truck that crashed into a Jersey barrier on I-5 in Tacoma Tuesday morning was cited for negligent driving.

State Trooper Johnna Batiste tweeted that speed, wet conditions, and inexperience were "all causing factors" in the crash that shut down the freeway for hours.

The crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. Northbound lanes reopened around 7:45 a.m. Southbound lanes reopened around 8 a.m.

The crash occurred on a problematic stretch of the freeway that has been an issue for months. This is the eighth crash in that area in recent months, according to Trooper Batiste.

No other vehicles were involved. There are no injuries, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Northbound traffic was diverted so crews could clean up spilled diesel.

According to a witness who was behind the truck at the time of the crash, the semi was traveling at a "high rate of speed," Batiste said.
