I-5 lane closures near Southcenter start this weekend

After a one week delay, the South King County slowdown on Intersate 5 begins Friday night.

Southbound I-5 will be reduced to just two lanes from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for the next five weekends. The lane closures will be from South 188th Street to South 219th Street near Tukwila.

Drivers are encourage to take alternate routes, including SR 99, 167, and 509.

WSDOT is repaving and rehabilitating 13 miles of I-5 between the Duwamish River Bridge in Tukwila and South 320th Street in Federal Way. The repaving is weather dependent, and last week the work was postponed one week due to rain.

Upcoming I-5 lane reduction weekends:

  • July 22-25: Southbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes from South 188th Street to South 219th Street.
  • July 29-Aug. 1: Southbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes from South 188th Street to South 219th Street.
  • Aug. 12-15: Southbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes from the Duwamish River Bridge to Klickitat Drive.
  • Aug. 19-22: Southbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes at the Duwamish River Bridge.
