A man died and his three passengers were hurt Saturday in a head-on crash on SR 507 in Spanaway.

Troopers say a pickup truck driven by a 31-year-old Roy man was traveling southbound when it crossed the center line and struck a Toyota 4Runner head-on.

The truck rolled and came to rest off the roadway, then caught fire. The 4Runner ended up in the northbound lane.

A 50-year-old Tacoma man, the driver of the Toyota, was killed. The injured in his car include a 50-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl, who is said to be in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The family's neighbors started hearing about what happened Sunday morning, leaving many of them in shock.

"I just don't have any words," said Christina Grasley, who lives next door to the family.

Trooper Guy Gill said a detective found a man "hiding in the woods" several hours after the collision and he admitted to running from the scene.

The suspect was booked into Pierce County Jail on investigation of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

Details making this tragedy even harder to grasp for a mourning community.

"Drunk drivers are selfish and they don't think about anybody but themselves," said Lynnette Resop.
