Teen staying at relatives' house in Spanaway dies in suspected overdose

The sheriff's department said the boy was staying at his relatives' home when he is believed to have overdosed on narcotics.

SPANAWAY, Wash. — A 13-year-old boy died Friday from a suspected overdose of narcotics in Spanaway.

“This again is a grim reminder of how dangerous fentanyl and illegal narcotics are to our community,” the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Paramedics with Central Pierce Fire responded to a medical emergency at 8:03 a.m. where a boy was not breathing.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drug paraphernalia was found near the teen. Deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department who were called to the scene believe the boy died from an overdose of “illegal” narcotics.

The boy was staying at his relatives’ home overnight with his brothers, according to the sheriff’s department.

A man who is the roommate of the homeowner was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail on a previous warrant.

The case will be sent to the prosecutor’s office for review.
