SEATTLE -- Two boys were injured after an explosion at an Enumclaw house Friday afternoon.
The King County Sheriff's Office said the initial call came in at 4:30 p.m. at a home in the 24900 block of SE 433rd Street.
Enumclaw Fire Department officials said the boys suffered "significant" injuries; a 10-year-old was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with burns on 80% of his body and was in critical condition, a 9-year-old boy was transported by medics with burns on 8% of his body.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but King County Sheriff's Office said initial reports indicate the boys were possibly using a gas can near a campfire.
Fire Chief Randy Fehr was saddened to hear about the accident "my heart sunk." Fehr coached both injured boys in football. "They're both good boys, really hard workers, just great kids so we're pulling for both of them," he explained.
The King County Sheriff's Office arson unit will investigate and determine how the incident happened.
Enumclaw is about 35 miles southeast of Seattle.
