PUYALLUP, Wash. — At least two children were among the five people killed in a single-car crash on State Route 512 in Puyallup early Sunday morning.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said the crash happened near State Route 161 just before 4:30 a.m.
According to the Washington State Patrol, a Ford Flex driving eastbound on SR 512 left the roadway to the right and struck a support pillar for the overpass. One person was ejected from the vehicle which caught fire. The four other passengers were not able to escape the vehicle.
Two of the passengers were identified as 11-year-old girls. Another passenger was identified as a 29-year-old, but their gender was not listed. The ages of the two other passengers, a male and a female, were not listed.
Authorities do not believe weather was a factor in the crash as the road was clear and dry and there was clear visibility.
The identities of the victims are still being withheld pending information from the medical examiner.
All eastbound lanes of SR 512 were closed for several hours Sunday and Washington State Department of Transportation crews were on the scene for traffic control. Trooper John Dattilo said the Washington State Patrol's Major Accident Investigation Team was activated, which resulted in the lane closures lasting several hours.
All lanes reopened just before 1 p.m.
"Our hearts go out to all those affected by this terrible scene," Dattilo said.
