OAK HARBOR, Wash. — Six people were injured Wednesday after a carnival ride tipped over in Oak Harbor.
In a post, the city of Oak Harbor said all six of the injuries were minor and the victims are being treated.
The ride was "promptly secured and shut down," the city said. It will be working closely with the vendor to investigate the cause and ensure there are no future incidents.
"We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors," said Police Chief Tony Slowik. “Our priority is to thoroughly investigate this incident and take all necessary measures to maintain the highest safety standards."
The carnival was shut down for the rest of Wednesday night after the ride tipped over. On Thursday morning the ride called the "Cyclone" was disassembled and packed up onto the back of a semi-truck.
Following the incident, the Mayor of Oak Harbor made the decision that all mechanical rides at the carnival needed to be shut down for the rest of the carnival which runs through Sunday.
"I'm erring on the side of caution for our citizens and their safety," said Mayor Ronnie Wright, with the City of Oak Harbor. "We've also received overwhelming feedback from the community that they are just not really comfortable with the carnival at this point."
The Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce is hosting the carnival and the rides are operated by Paradise Amusements, which is based in Idaho. KING 5 reached out to both the Chamber of Commerce and Paradise Amusements on Thursday for comment, but did not hear back from either.
Several people that KING 5 spoke to said that they had concerns about the ride in the days leading up to the incident, due to sounds the ride was making.
"It made this weird noise when we were waiting, and I told my mom 'Oh, that sounded dangerous,'" said Kevin Williams, a child who rode the ride the day before the incident. "It kind of sounded like it would pop out of place and something bad would happen."
Kim Newcomb's daughter rode the ride the day before the incident. "She said when she was riding it, the motor sounded weird, like there was some kind of clicking noise."
People said they hope for more safety precautions in the future.
"They're getting taken down and put up and taken down and put up," said Newcomb, referring to the carnival rides. "You got to make sure that you're doing your part as the company to make sure that those things are staying together well."
The post said the city would provide further updates as they become available.
