Alder Lake is a popular location for many to spend their Fourth of July weekend, but Tacoma Power is warning visitors that the drought has majorly impacted the lake. Due to low water levels, one beach is already closed for the season.
Tacoma Power says that Alder Lake's water level is about 20 feet lower this July than it was in July of 2014.
As of July 1, in addition to one swimming area closure, Tacoma Power had also closed moorage on the Alder Lake Park dock.
Tacoma Power said if the lake was drops any further, it could be difficult for boaters to launch into the lake.
Along with low water levels, a statewide burn ban has made it illegal to build wood or charcoal fires at nearby campgrounds.
Alder Lake is seeing historically low levels of water input and because water needs to be released through the hydroelectric dam, water levels will continue to drop.
Tacoma Power plans to continue to provide updated information to visitors throughout the summer.
