KING COUNTY, Wash. — King County Sheriff's Office deputies continue to search for who shot and killed a delivery driver in late January as the driver's family mourns the loss of their brother, husband and father.
Deputies said 50-year-old Sergay Kubay was shot and killed at Fairwood Pond Apartments in Renton.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said he was delivering packages Wednesday night and was fatally shot after an altercation. Deputies believe he was targeted as a delivery driver.
Sergay Kubay’s body was found at 5 a.m. on Jan. 25.
“Somebody killed him on the spot. I wish that would never happen,” said Nikolay Kubay, Sergey’s brother.
The 50-year-old died while trying to provide for his family, delivering packages for Amazon. He leaves behind a wife and two children, a 5-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son.
“It's beyond imagination. We're praying for kids. We can only pray for the wife. We can support them somehow,” said Nikolay Kubay. A GoFundMe has been set up to help Sergey’s family.
Sergey was part of a large tight-knit family, one of 11 siblings. Nikolay Kubay wants the person responsible for killing his brother behind bars. But right now, he said he can only focus on helping Sergey’s family, and not even think of his own loss.
“Even if I stop and start thinking about him without crying, it's just impossible. He was really close to me. He was really nice guy,” Nikolay Kubay said.
Sergey’s family is now dealing with an unforeseen loss and the cost that comes with it.
“Amazon definitely has to do something. Nobody is prepared for that. Nobody, nobody,” Nikolay Kubay said.
An Amazon spokesperson said the company has offered its support to Kubay's family.
“We’re deeply saddened by this terrible crime and are working to support the King County Sheriff's Office as they investigate," the spokesperson said in a statement to KING 5. "We're also in touch with the driver’s family and have offered our support during this difficult time.”
Sergey, a rideshare driver, and cab driver have all been killed on the job so far this year. State lawmakers are now trying to help. Senators discussed a proposed bill earlier this week that would expand death benefits for rideshare drivers.
Nikolay Kubay said families including their own need all the help they can get while trying to cope with loss.
“We will remember him and his big big warm heart. He will always in our heart,” Nikolay Kubay said.
King County deputies have not released suspect information.
