An armored car guard shot a bank robbery suspect in Lakewood on Monday afternoon, but the suspect escaped.

Police said the incident happened at the Bank of America at Bridgeport Way S. and 59th Ave. SW.

Bank customer Blaine Rees said he knew something was going to happen when he saw a man in a disguise in the entry way.

"And I just entered the bank... and I was lookign for someone to tell and about that time the security officer opened up right behind me," he said. The crook was over here, and the security officer was over here, I'm here, and the shots are going back and forth. I didn't have anywhere to go."

People in the bank said the armored car driver was in the vault, came out and fired several shots at a man he believed was trying to rob the bank.

Bank customers said the suspect was hit in the head and ran out to an awaiting car, leaving a trail of blood. He also left behind glasses, a hat and a wig.

The guard told police the suspect had a gun.

No one inside the bank was hurt.

A man was later dropped off at St. Joseph's hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Police were "hopeful" it's the suspect.

Lakewood Police are still looking for dark getaway car, possibly an Acura, with a white, spray-painted spoiler on the back. It was driven by an African-American woman in her 20s with dark-rimmed glasses and a ponytail.
