Man arrested in connection to ‘egregious’ rape, assault of Lacey woman

The 63-year-old woman suffered facial injuries, and lost her teeth, in the Oct. 9 attack.

LACEY, Wash. — Olympia police arrested a man Thursday morning accused of beating and raping a Lacey woman.

According to investigators, Ryan Bezon repeatedly hit a 63-year-old woman with a rock before sexually assaulting her early on Oct. 9, the day before his arrest.

Lacey Police Department Sgt. Jeremy Knight said officers described the attack as "egregious."

A surveillance camera from a nearby business captured the incident, said Knight.

Lacey police shared surveillance images with neighboring police agencies and Thursday morning, an Olympia police officer recognized the man as Bezon. He was taken into custody near an encampment on Martin Way and Ensign Road.

Bezon is held on assault and rape charges. Thurston County Judge Carol Murphy ruled Bezon would not be allowed to bail out while awaiting arraignment and a potential trial.

Murphy called that move “extremely rare,” but said it was appropriate for someone who appears to have what Murphy said was a “propensity for violence.”

KING 5 does not typically identify people arrested for crimes until they have been charged, but Lacey police wanted his name and face publicized. Detectives believe Bezon may be responsible for other crimes.

Christian Sanchez found the woman bleeding behind his Lacey business, Tire Dogs. He said he is relieved to hear about the arrest.

"She tried to get up. As she stood up, blood was just gushing from her,” said Sanchez. He said he recognized the woman as someone who routinely slept in the woods behind his shop.

Sanchez said after seeing the extent of the injuries, he feared the woman would not survive the attack.

”Bad," he said, "not something you want to see."
