Auburn woman arrested in connection to Christmas Eve killing of Puyallup man

The man was found in a Renton parking lot on Dec. 24.

RENTON, Wash. — An Auburn woman is accused of shooting and killing her ex-boyfriend inside of a car in Renton, dumping his body outside of the car then fleeing the scene on Christmas Eve, according to charging documents from the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

The woman, 43-year-old Bridgette Cook, is charged with second-degree murder. She remains in jail in lieu of $1 million bail, according to the prosecutor's office.

King County Medical Examiners identified the victim as Jerid Sprague, 29 of Puyallup. Sprague died from a gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled a homicide, according to medical examiners.

Early Christmas Eve morning, Cook was allegedly inside of a car with Sprague and Cook's new boyfriend near the 1100 block of Oakesdale Avenue SW in Renton. The three were reportedly wrapping Christmas presents when an argument began between Cook and Sprague, documents state.

Video surveillance footage shows Cook punching Sprague while sitting behind him in the car and pulling out a gun, charging documents state. The people inside the car engage in an altercation, then Cook allegedly shoots Sprague.

Charging documents state that Cook pulled Sprague's body from the car and quickly left the scene.

When police spoke with Cook weeks later, she "falsely accused" the other man in the car of shooting Sprague, documents state.

In an interview with police, Cook told detectives that she and Sprague previously dated and had known each other for about 10 years, documents state. Cook's boyfriend told police he and Cook has been dating for a few months and frequently hung out with Sprague but "there's always a third wheel," documents state.

Cook's arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
