SEATTLE — A new play area is set to open at a popular Ballard park where a few years ago, it was the site of one of Seattle’s largest homeless encampments.
"Where it was, to where it is now, Is pretty incredible,” said Christopher Poetter, who works near the park.
Ballard Commons Park has come a long way since 2021. The park is in the heart of Ballard and after removal of the encampment, the park closed for 15 months.
Now, Seattle Parks and Rec is days away from opening a new nautical themed play area, costing taxpayers close to $1 million.
"The need for a safe, fun, outdoor area, that's not a screen,” said Poetter. “Like a place for kids just to be kids and we're excited for it."
Poetter works at Katsu Burger and Sushi, located a block away from the park. He's been critical of how issues at the park have been handled by the city over the years. Issues, he said, that have trickled over to the business. But Poetter admits, the park is much better now.
"I was expecting it to be in kind of rough shape and it's still clean and pristine,” said Poetter. “I think they're doing a really good job of keeping it nice. I feel safe."
And safety is at top of mind, for the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department.
"We have an expanded ranger program they visit this park,” said Rachel Schulkin, communications manager of Seattle Parks and Rec. “And the concierge is there, talk to them if you have safety concerns. I think it's good to reach out to SPD if you see something that's dangerous and illegal.”
Poetter considers the Ballard Commons a treasure that should never be locked away again.
Seattle Councilmember Dan Strauss, who represents the district and helped spearhead the play area project, was not available for comment.
There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20 at Ballard Commons.
