The Battery Street Tunnel closed forever on Friday, February 1. The tunnel had connected the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Highway 99 through Belltown and under Battery Street.
The northbound lanes of the tunnel have been shut down since the viaduct closed on January 11. The southbound lanes closed at 10 p.m. Friday.
Despite community proposals to save the tunnel, which included transforming it into a park, farm, or transit option, the city will fill in the tunnel with rubble from the demolished viaduct and seal it.
Removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle will be completed by summer 2019, according to transportation officials.
Workers will systematically remove concrete pieces to demolish the structure; officials said it won't come down all at once like the Kingdome did in 2000.
WSDOT says the tunnel’s age and condition mean it would require costly upgrades to make it safe for other uses.
SDOT has previously said seismic retrofitting could cost upwards of $100 million, and there is no allocated funding.
