People sleeping in their Kirkland apartments rushed out of bed and into the street Friday when a fire threatened to burn their building down.

Witnesses told firefighters the fire started just before 4:00 a.m. on the exterior of the building on the 800 block of Market Street.

Some residents smelled smoke early and got out safely. Police officers driving by also spotted the fire, helping to get the remaining people out by banging on doors.

The cause has not been determined.

Fire investigators plan to speak with a group of teens who were in the area, hoping to get some info on how the fire may have started.

One teen described the fire as bursting out of windows.

It was just crazy, it didn't seem real, he said.

No one was hurt.
