3-year-old girl hit, killed by driver backing into parking space in Bellevue, police say

Police say a pickup truck driver was backing into a parking space and hit the child at a Bellevue apartment complex.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — A 3-year-old girl was struck and killed by a pickup truck driver backing into a parking stall in Bellevue on Tuesday night, according to the Bellevue Police Department.

The fatal incident occurred just after 7 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 14100 block of Southeast 4th Street, which is near Sammamish High School.

Bellevue police Capt. Ryan Parrott said a mother and her daughter were walking in the apartment complex when a driver in a Chevy Silverado pickup truck was backing into a parking stall and hit the child. Parrott said the mother was within 6 to 10 feet of the girl when she was hit.

The mother and the driver attempted life-saving efforts, police said, but the girl died at the scene.

The driver, a 45-year-old man, remained on scene and cooperated with the police investigation.

“This is a tragic, horrible thing that has occurred,” Parrott said, offering condolences to the family. He said a Chaplain is on scene to speak with family members and witnesses, and that peer support will also be offered.

First responders will remain on scene for several hours. Parrott said the incident is under investigation and police have not yet determined if the incident is under criminal investigation.
