TACOMA, Wash. — Several community members gathered to rescue a crow trapped in a tree on Sunday.
The rescue mission started at Tacoma's Point Defiance Park, where someone found it hanging upside down in a tree. Its leg was stuck in fishing line.
Several people at Owen Beach worked together to free it. They used a tree limb cutter to get its leg out of the wire, then slowly put it back on the ground.
"Our maintenance group came out with a pruning saw. We had a few members of the public that had their own methods of helping the crow, we had some of our contracted security come out," said Alex Holmes, a guide at Point Defiance Park. "Even the kayak rental shack was able to help us get a box to put the crow in."
The crow is recovering from an injured wing and leg at PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and staff members hope to release it back into Point Defiance Park after it heals.
According to PAWS, here's how to transport an injured wild animal to the nearest rehabilitation center:
- Find a suitable container (cardboard box, pet carrier). Line it with a towel or cloth.
- Throw a towel or a sheet over the animal so they can’t see you. Wearing gloves, gently pick up the animal and place in the container.
- Keep the animal in a warm, dark, quiet place. Do not give food or water. Leave the animal alone.
- Take the animal to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.
