Crash during Gig Harbor parade injures 5 people

Participants were walking in the parade when a white van accelerated and ran over several people, video shows.

GIG HARBOR, Wash — Five people were injured in a crash during a Gig Harbor parade on Saturday morning, according to the Gig Harbor Fire Department.

The crash happened at the Gig Harbor Maritime Parade just before noon.

"It's amazing there weren't ... it's a miracle. It could have been a lot worse," said witness Cora Reuter.

Drone video of the parade shows participants holding a sign while walking in front of a white van in the parade. Suddenly, the van accelerates and runs over several people. It comes to a stop when it crashes into the back of another truck in the parade.

"People seemed to go under the car, or fly to the side. When I saw it happen, I thought there's no way nobody died," said Reuter. "Several people came in quickly and pulled people out to make sure everyone was OK. Dads came in and just ripped their kids back."

Fire officials said four of the five people injured were taken to the hospital.

Gig Harbor Police Chief Kelly Busey said none of the injuries are life-threatening.

"I think we were very lucky on this one," Busey told KING 5. "We can't plan for every contingency, but we have things that we have thought through to handle incidents like this."

The crash happened right in front of the pre-planned emergency command post, allowing fire and medical personnel to respond immediately.

Officials have not provided any information yet on what caused the crash; Busey said officers did not have an immediate opportunity to question the driver.

"She was very shaken up obviously and needed some medical attention, but our attention was drawn elsewhere, too," Busey said. "We'll be following up in the coming days to find out what happened, through her perspective."
