Disaster managers prep for the future by looking at the past

Later this month, the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center will play host to an emergency preparedness conference.
Coe Elementary School in Seattle displays their emergency management plan for a natural disaster, including a plan for families.

Disasters don’t follow boundaries and come in all types -- from earthquakes and mudslides to incidents like the recent shootings that have plagued our country. Emergency Managers need to be equipped to handle any kind of incident or disaster. That is why the Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference is focusing on building stronger partnerships across our communities.

The conference, happening April 18-19 at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, will give people the opportunity to gain education and experience not only through formalized training but also from lessons learned.

This year’s presenters include a responder from Orlando who will talk about the Pulse Nightclub shooting. There are several workshops that will highlight school safety, active shooter situations, last year’s Amtrak crash near Dupont and a host of other preparedness and response topics.

“The conference provides current information on the best tactics and tools available to help ensure the safety of our citizens and responders, as well as ways to help produce more resilient communities,” said Partners in Emergency Preparedness Chairman Aaron Collins.

The theme of this year's conference is 'Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.'
