Dog helps deputy save owner in Stevens County

The deputy later followed Gita to a cabin, where they saw an 84-year-old man calling for help.

STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. — A dog helped a deputy save their owner in Stevens County last week.

According to the Stevens County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was patrolling a wooded area in Stevens County when he saw a 13-year-old dog named Gita sitting in the road.

The sheriff's office said the deputy tried to get Gita inside his car so they could try and find the owner, but Gita wouldn't go inside.

The deputy could not find the owner and returned to Gita. The deputy later followed Gita to a cabin, where he saw an 84-year-old man calling for help.

The sheriff's office said the man fell and injured his leg. They also said the man had other medical conditions and needed regular medications, and he had been lying near the cabin for hours.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff's office said the man "may have had serious consequences" if he wasn't found.

Sheriffs thanked Gita for saving the owner's life.

"It turns out the dog, Gita, is a 13-year-old rescue dog and best friend of the gentleman in trouble," the Stevens County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. "We credit Gita for saving his life that day.  The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us.  Thank you, Deputy Wright, for going to the extra effort and thank you Gita for being a good girl and true hero!"
