Driver hospitalized after dump truck crashes into Edmonds home

The homeowner says he was inside the garage at the time of the crash.

EDMONDS, Wash. — A driver is in the hospital in critical condition after an overturned dump truck crashed into an Edmonds home Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 8 a.m. to find the truck had hit a power pole and crashed into the home's garage, according to Christie Veley, public information officer for South County Fire.

Neighbors had rushed over to assist the driver. Jeff Pittman, one of the people who helped, said the driver was still inside of the truck, asking for help. With the help of others, they lowered the driver out of the truck.

The driver, a 43-year-old man, was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to Veley.

Officials initially told KING 5 nobody was home at the time of the crash. However, Rick Nissen said he was in his garage at the time of the crash.

"It felt like an explosion," he told KING 5. "It was that loud."

He said he thought a bomb had exploded.

Nissen was not injured.

Technical rescue crews used shoring to support the walls of the home to prevent it from collapsing while hazmat crews cleaned up a diesel spill.

The truck was fully loaded, and police said a "possible brake failure" may have caused the crash.

Power lines were knocked down and Edmonds police initially said nearly 600 homes were impacted. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, 83 customers were still affected, according to the Snohomish County Public Utilities District's online outage map.

Washington State Patrol's commercial vehicle division is investigating.
