Elderly couple killed while crossing street after church service in Edgewood

A 72-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man were crossing the street after attending service at Salvation Baptist Church on Sunday.

EDGEWOOD, Wash. — An Edgewood couple is dead after being hit by a driver while crossing the street on a busy road.

Flowers were placed on the side of the road near the corner of Eighth Street East and 106th Avenue Court East to remember the tragedy.

“This is very uncommon because you had two people that were hit by a vehicle and it was during the day,” said Sgt. Darren Moss Jr. with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

In the Pacific Northwest, the weather can be unpredictable. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said unlike Monday’s dense fog in Edgewood, Sunday was clear and sunny when a driver hit and killed an elderly couple around 1:30 p.m. A 72-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man were crossing the street after attending service at Salvation Baptist Church.

“The driver was evaluated; he was not impaired, and it didn’t sound like he was speeding, but we’re still investigating to see what the cause of the collision might have been and determine what caused this horrible accident,” said Moss Jr.

One member of the church told KING 5 off camera that the couple's family was devastated and that they were both beloved long-time members of the congregation.

“We did have witnesses to the collision as well. Those people gave statements about what they saw,” said Moss Jr. “I can only imagine the driver feels terrible. But we do appreciate that they stayed behind to make sure they can get some assistance and let deputies know what occurred.”

Deputies said the driver in the crash was cooperative. No charges have been filed.
