EVERETT, Wash. — Drivers in Everett will be hit with a $124 fine for speeding through the school zone along West Casino Road starting Monday.
The speed cameras are on both ends of the school zone near Horizon Elementary School.
The enforcement period surrounds school drop-off and pick-up times from around 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., and from 3:25 p.m. to 4:25 p.m.
A 2023 study showed that more than 10,000 drivers a month traveled 10 miles per hour over the speed limit while the beacons were flashing in this school zone.
The city of Everett added signage about the enforcement in February and initiated a 30-day warning period on April 3.
The number of speeding vehicles dropped to about 2,500 per month during the education and warning period, according to the city.
"We want Everett to be a city with zero fatalities from speeding, especially in school zones,” Everett traffic engineer Corey Hart said. “As part of our Vision Zero strategy for Everett, photo enforcement will be an important tool to enhance our traffic safety efforts."
Everett also identified six locations with a high crash history and is adding red-light cameras at those intersections. That includes Broadway and 16th Street, Rucker Avenue and 41st Street, Evergreen Way and Casino Road, Evergreen Way and 4th Avenue W, Everett Mall Way and 7th Ave SE and Evergreen Way and 112th Street SW.
There are a number of other jurisdictions in Western Washington that use red light and school zone cameras including cities like Seattle, Federal Way and Bellevue.
