SEATTLE — Something was missing outside of a family's new home in Seattle on Monday. A U-Haul truck containing two unloaded handguns was reported stolen from Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood in the early morning hours of Aug. 12.
Byron Hofstetter and Jackie Yu just moved to the city from San Diego so Hofstetter could start a new job.
He said they parked their moving truck outside their new home on Northeast 78th Street late Monday night, but when he woke up for work, he noticed it was gone.
"We basically unloaded some items from the truck and we had a plan to have movers come and [help] in the morning," Hofstetter said. "And I'm like, uh... it's gone."
A neighbor's security camera captured the theft around 4 a.m., Hofstetter said.
The initial report taken by the Seattle Police Department described the stolen items, including a .40 caliber Sig Sauer P239 DAK pistol and a .38 caliber Ruger LCR revolver. Citing the advice of investigators, Hofstetter declined to comment on that part of the investigation.
According to police, the unloaded firearms were in a locked box, inside a plastic bin that was zip-tied shut.
In addition the guns, the family is missing a Vespa scooter, furniture, jewelry and sentimental items.
Hofstetter said his deceased father's artwork was in the truck; Yu added that their 18-month-old daughter's baby book and scrapbook materials were left behind.
"I pray to God I can recover all that. To me, it's irreplaceable," Yu said. "[We] can't redo that first year of her life."
The Vespa scooter has a California license plate: 20K0167.
The U-Haul truck has an Arizona license plate: AJ48153.
