Fans say Apple Cup rivalry between UW, WSU will never be the same

Saturday's 115th Apple Cup marked the end of an era for football fans of both the Huskies and Cougars.

SEATTLE — The 115th Apple Cup was going to be memorable long before the Washington’s last-second field goal gave the Huskies the victory over Washington State University.

With the University of Washington joining the Big Ten conference next year, this year’s Apple Cup marked that last time the schools will meet as conference foes in the Pac-12.

"It's all falling apart. It's sad,” said longtime Husky fan Tom McQuary.

McQuary graduated in 1967, the same year as his wife, Suzy graduated from Washington State University. The couple’s been coming to Apple Cups since they got married in 1969.

”There were a few years there where after the game, Tom did not speak to me for a few days. There was silence at our house,” said Suzy.

Earlier this week, the schools announced the Apple Cup games will continue, for at least the next five years.

The teams will meet in September 2024 at Seattle’s Lumen Field, before returning to the campus stadiums in Pullman and Seattle on alternating years. It’s not yet clear when the games will be played from 2025 to 2028.

Will the McQuarys be as excited about next year’s game?

”Ask me in a year and we’ll see,” said Suzy McQuary.
