Food drive honors fallen Lakewood police officers

LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- Saturday marks the fifth anniversary of the day four Lakewood police officers were murdered at a Forza Coffee shop in Parkland.

Instead of holding a memorial, the police department and the families of fallen officers are giving back through the Fallen Officers Food Drive.

The donations are going to the Emergency Food Network, in honor of the four officers shot and killed five years ago. Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Tina Griswold, Ronald Owens and Greg Richards won't get a formal memorial this weekend, but their families, volunteers and the police department said they are being remembered with every can and dollar donated Wednesday for the Fallen Officers Food Drive. Organizers said it's a way of serving the community just as the officers did with their jobs.

"The message today is to remember our fallen officers and honor them by basically what their life was which was serving the community," Lakewood Police Chief Bret Farrar said.

While the food drive ended Wednesday at 5 p.m., the Lakewood Police Department is giving people an opportunity to continue to donate online through it's Facebook page.
