SEATTLE — Dr. Brad McDavid didn’t stop the music, he just put it on pause.
The former University of Washington Husky Marching Band director, who retired earlier this year, has taken on a new role as director of Seattle University's inaugural Pep Band.
McDavid’s hiring was announced on Tuesday.
Vice President of Athletics Shaney Fink said in a statement that the Redhawks are thrilled to welcome McDavid as the Seattle U Pep Band director.
"Brad's experience and passion will be instrumental in shaping this new program, and we look forward to the energy and school spirit it will bring to our community," Fink said. "This is an exciting moment for Seattle University as we expand the student experience and create a lasting tradition that will enhance the atmosphere at our games and events for years to come."
McDavid retired from UW at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, culminating with the Husky Football team’s appearance at the College Football Playoffs National Championship.
In all, he led the Husky Marching Band through 30 seasons — which totals approximately 6,000 musicians. The marching band performed on tours in Australia, China, France, Ireland, Japan and Scandinavia. He was also indicted into the Washington Music Educators National Conference Hall of Fame in 2016.
McDavid said his new opportunity with Seattle U is the perfect role for his skills and passion.
"I am incredibly honored to be asked to develop the Seattle U Pep Band program," said Dr. McDavid in the news release. "Collegiate sports and athletic bands have always been my passion and I'm enormously excited to be able to take my experience and develop a pep band program for Redhawk athletics and the students of Seattle University."
The Seattle U Pep Band is a first-of-its-kind venture for the school for students to perform at men’s and women’s basketball games, boost school spirit and energize the crowd at various events. For more information on the band, visit goseattleu.com.
