WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Former Washington Governor Gary Locke took the oath Monday morning to become the next U.S. ambassador to China.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton swore in Locke at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The Senate confirmed Locke's appointment last week.
Locke is leaving his job as Secretary of Commerce and will be the first Chinese-American to serve as Ambassador to China.
As a child of Chinese immigrants growing up in the state of washington, having the opportunity to represent America, the land of my birth, and to represent American values is surely beyond any dream I could possibly have, said Locke.
Locke replaces Jon Huntsman, who resigned in April to run for president.
